Catherine – the name

On the day of St. Catherine on December 7, in our church we held a festive Divine Liturgy.

Father Anatoly and father Alexander dressed in red felony and stole that happens in the days of special memory of great martyrs for the glory of God. We have repeatedly noted that Saturday services create a special cozy atmosphere for a focused prayer under the crooning of the choir in the right aisle of the church. That day, among parishioners, many women named Catherine were present – Father Anatoly congratulated them especially at the end of the service and gave each a communion bread at the kissing of the cross.

Restoration of an ancient icon

An ancient icon brought from Solovki once, has been offered to our church by a family parishioners . It’s quite a large icon, about 40 by 50 cm , written on a blackboard in the middle or end of the19th century. The icon represents Deisus ( which means ” petition “, ” prayer ” in Greek ): in it center, Jesus Christ is depicted. On His right and left are John the Baptist and the Godmother represented in a traditional gesture of prayer intercession. Behind the altar of Jesus are two angels. The Apostles Peter and Paul are also depicted with St. Nicholas and the founders of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Solovetsky monastery – Sts. Savvaty and Zosima. The icon was not painted in the artistic style common to the iconography of the 19th century , but in the manner of 16th-century painters .

Diocesan Council 31.10-3.11.2013. By father Anatoliy

On Wednesday we went to Ottawa with Bishop Irenaeus in his car. It was decided that we pass through St. Lazare, in order to inspect the home chapel of Sergei and Galina

Nazarov. The family wishes to bless this little church in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov. The building was completely ready for the worship, except that the icons

were not placed in canonical order. The chapel was clean, warm and cozy and especially the Eastern situation of the site is ideal for personal and public prayers.

The bishop pointed out some details that still need to be completed and promised to consecrate the chapel for the holiday of Father Seraphim in August .

Fund raising for church roof

In 2011 we started our fund-raising to collect funds for the repair of the Cathedral roof. The amount of $50K seemed unrealistic to achieve at that time, though the roof was already in such a critical condition that, unless urgent measures were taken, it could have caused us higher costs  in the near future.

The fund-raising has been going on for a year – through our parishioners’ private donations, allocations from parish concerts and other events, as well as dinners organized by the sisterhood. We have managed to collect forty-two thousand dollars and the Church committee made up for the missing sum so the work could start as soon as possible before winter sets in. The much needed roof repair is already in progress and it can be seen from the street by anybody. Apart from this, some routine works are currently on going in the altar to have both the inside of the altar iconostasis and the altar window painted. All these renovations have been made possible by to your kind donations and responsiveness – there is a mite from each of you in the beauty and the safety of the Cathedral.

The Church rector, Father Anatoliy, and the Church committee deeply appreciate your help and thank everybody for the ongoing support!
